KUCHING: SACOFA, Sarawak’s premier telecommunications infrastructure company, has officially inaugurated its new corporate office, marking a significant milestone in the state’s digital transformation.

The opening ceremony held today was officiated by Utility and Telecommunication Minister, Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, and attended by industry leaders and government officials.

“SACOFA has become the backbone of Sarawak’s telecommunications sector,” Julaihi said, emphasising the company’s pivotal role in advancing the state’s connectivity.

Julaihi delivers his speech at the inauguration of SACOFA’s new corporate office.

“With over 1,688 towers, 12,000 kilometres of fibre optic cables, and the integration of 5G technology, SACOFA has extended connectivity beyond urban areas, reaching suburban and remote communities.”

The company’s success comes from its infrastructure-sharing model, which helps telecom providers expand networks more affordably, overcome challenges like tough terrain and regulations, and ensure that all Sarawakians can access digital opportunities.

“SACOFA’s infrastructure is crucial for ensuring Sarawak’s digital backbone remains strong, scalable, and secure.

“This is essential for the state’s long-term socioeconomic transformation and the growth of emerging industries,” Julaihi highlighted.

In times of crisis, such as floods or natural disasters, SACOFA’s infrastructure is indispensable, ensuring seamless emergency communications, aiding relief coordination, and keeping the public informed.

SACOFA has also played a key role in making Sarawak a leader in digital connectivity by pioneering submarine cable infrastructure, which is crucial for international connections, bandwidth resilience, and data sovereignty.

“SACOFA’s early investments in submarine cables have positioned Sarawak as a critical player in securing data sovereignty and bandwidth resilience, essential elements for the global digital economy,” Julaihi added.

Looking ahead, SACOFA will help make Sarawak a regional hub for data exchange, with future links to Johor, Singapore, Batam and Brunei, turning it into a digital hub for Borneo and Southeast Asia.

“SACOFA’s efforts will continue to propel Sarawak’s growth as we expand our digital footprint,” Julaihi said.

“With SACOFA leading the way, we are not merely closing gaps; we are opening gateways.”
