KUCHING: Political analyst Datuk Peter Minos said many do not understand why the UMNO president was not aware that the sackings and suspensions of key UMNO members were, in fact, destroying the party itself.
“With popular and respected leaders like Khiary, Noh Omar, and Hishammudin now out, there is no democracy and no decency in UMNO but fear and terror of the president and his cronies.
“With only 26 seats won in the last general election out of 222, UMNO is “almost dead,” as one put it aptly.
“UMNO got zero state assembly legislative (DUN) seats in seven states in the peninsular. If that is not near death for a once-formidable party, I do not know what is,” he said in a press statement today.
He added that with the sackings and suspensions, UMNO is, in effect, accelerating its death.
“We cannot read the minds of the UMNO president, but there are one or two things we can say.
“Definitely, he fears his rivals in the party. He lacks confidence in himself, maybe because of the coming criminal court case in April.
“Some say that he cannot get any support to save his own skin from the prime minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim), who has repeatedly said he has zero tolerance for corruption and the corrupted lot.
“Maybe the UMNO president does not like Anwar’s anti-corruption crusade and so disturbs and destabilises, hoping for something good for himself. It is like memancing di air yang keruh (fishing in muddy water),” Minos explained.
According to him, it is a sad story and the near end for UMNO, and he is hoping that it will not adversely affect the federal government under the new prime minister.
