KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Fencing Association has agreed to work closely with Sarawak to set up a steering committee between the two associations as a first step to raise the standard of the sport.
Sabah Fencing Association president Datuk Alex Sham said such a step had been mooted for the past 15 years but only at the discussion stage.
But there is a new impetus now as the Sarawak Fencing Association has taken the initiative to reactivate the proposal.
Congratulating the Sarawak Federation Association on its move, Sham, who is also vice president of the National Fencing Association, said a special meeting for officials from Sarawak, Labuan, Kalimantan, Brunei and Sabah should be held to reactivate the sport in the Borneo region.
“I believe we can do it with full confidence and commitment from the Sarawak government in sports and a new leadership in the committee under Mohammad Tinggal Abdul Hamid,” said Sham.
The visit by the Sarawak officials led by the Sarawak Fencing Association president Mohammad Tinggal together with Sarawak State Sports Council officials included a dialogue session with the Sabah Fencing Association officials here.
Among the proposals was the formation of a Borneo Fencing Federation (BFF) committee and a Borneo Cup Fencing Championship.
He added that Sabah will discuss further the results of the discussion with the Sabah MSN, Brunei and Labuan as soon as possible.
If there is a consensus he will bring the matter to the CEO of Sarawak Sports Corporation for consideration.
