MIRI: A RM2 billion project entrusted to Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) is expected to supply electricity to Sabah under a cross-border energy agreement.

This is in addition to supplying power across the northern regions of Sarawak, including Miri, Limbang, and Lawas.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg disclosed this while detailing transformative projects aimed at boosting economic development and energy sustainability.

He was speaking to reporters after a site visit to Taman Ceria here today (Nov 30).

Under this project Petros is tasked with generating 500 MW of electricity using advanced gas and steam turbine technology.

This groundbreaking initiative incorporates hydrogen co-generation, representing a low-carbon, sustainable energy approach, he said.

Abang Johari emphasised the economic potential of the initiative, noting its role in spurring industrial and service sector growth, especially here.

He also highlighted the development of a RM300 million deep-water port here, upgrades to airports in the region, and the construction of a new bridge connecting Miri and Marudi, which will reduce travel time to just 30 minutes.

Sarawak’s broader vision, he said, involves generating 10 gigawatts (GW) of electricity by 2030 and 15 GW by 2035, leveraging a mix of gas, hydrogen, hydro, and solar energy sources.

With the first combined-cycle energy generation system in Malaysia, powered by cutting-edge technology from Mitsubishi, Sarawak will outpace neighbouring regions in adopting low-carbon solutions.

“We are leading the way in sustainable energy, supplying electricity to areas in northern Sarawak and beyond. This is a vital step in achieving our target of becoming Asean’s key energy provider,” said Abang Johari.

He said Sarawak’s sustainable energy production will cater not only to local needs but also to Asean nations.

“By 2030, we aim to supply 10,000 MW of electricity, helping 10 Asean countries meet their energy demands while driving Sarawak’s economic growth,” he added.

In this context he stated that the mix of advanced technologies positions Sarawak as an indispensable player in the regional energy ecosystem.

By becoming a leading energy exporter, Sarawak will generate significant revenue and reinforce its economic position, he said.

To support this energy revolution, Sarawak is investing heavily in infrastructure development, including transportation networks, ports, and upgraded airports.
