KUCHING: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia) has issued a weather warning for Malaysia, forecasting continuous heavy rain, strong winds, and rough seas until March 23.
According to the latest weather models for Sarawak, the monsoon surge is expected to persist, bringing significant rainfall and an increased risk of flooding in several districts across the state, with MET Malaysia issuing the weather warning at 12.30pm on Wednesday.
MET Malaysia has placed Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Kapit, Song and Bintulu under a continuous rain warning until March 20, advising residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas to take precautions as prolonged rainfall may lead to flash floods and landslides.
In addition to heavy rainfall, strong northeast winds of 50-60 km/h, with waves reaching up to 4.5 metres, are expected in the waters off Sarawak, with the warning remaining in effect until March 23.
The rough sea conditions pose a serious threat to maritime activities, including fishing and ferry services, prompting authorities to advise fishermen, ferry operators, and small boat users not to venture out to sea during this period.
MET Malaysia has also warned of potential sea level rises in West Sarawak, which may result in coastal flooding until March 21.
Authorities are urging the public to remain cautious, take necessary safety measures, and stay updated through official sources such as MET Malaysia’s website, official social media channels, and the myCuaca app for real-time weather updates, while also advising the public to follow local authorities and news channels for further updates and emergency information.
