KUCHING: A total of 100 members from Rotary Club of Kuching had the privilege of participating in hands-on nursery and seedling production activities at the Forest Department Nursery in Bintawa, here recently.

Forest Department Sarawak (FDS) said that the visit was part of the Rotary Club’s Environmental Sustainability Project in supporting the Greening Sarawak Campaign led by FDS.

“During the visit, Rotarians were given a briefing and an informative tour by officers from the Forest Department, who provided in-depth knowledge about the various stages of plant propagation, from seed sowing to plant nurturing.

“The club members were also able to witness first-hand the meticulous care and attention given to each seedling, highlighting the dedication of the Forest Department’s team,” the department said in a statement on today.

“Collaborations like these are essential in fostering a deeper understanding of the work being done by FDS to protect our environment.

“We hope this visit inspires further advocacy for sustainable practices among the public,” she said.

To date, FDS owns eight nurseries throughout Sarawak and can accommodate approximately 800,000 seedlings at one time.

The establishment of nurseries is crucial to ensure enough seedlings particularly the high value indigenous species.

It has also provided job opportunities or additional income to the local communities through engagement as nursery workers, purchasing of seeds/wildings and others.
