SIBU: Bukit Assek residents have been urged to play their part in keeping their neighbourhood clean and healthy, particularly in the fight against dengue.

Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek said that relying solely on the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) is insufficient.

“It is the responsibility of the community to ensure cleanliness, not just within their homes but throughout the entire area,” he said at the launch of a mass ‘gotong-royong’ cleaning campaign yesterday (Dec 15).

The event, organised by 11 Village Security and Development Committees (JKKKs) from the Bukit Assek area, saw over 100 members participate in a clean-up at Jalan Tiong Hua Old Market.

“We want to demonstrate practically why littering, especially in drains, is unacceptable. This knowledge is crucial for their understanding,” he added.

The JKKKs involved included JKKK Wong King Huo, JKKK Jalan Terap, JKKK Sung Sang Poh, Salim, JKKK Jalan Bruang, JKKK Perumahan Maling, JKKK Amoy, JKKK Kawasan Tekam, JKKK Kawasan Jalan Ai Ting, JKKK Kawasan Jalan Layang-Layang, and JKKK Jalan Bengkel.
