RM67 mln channelled into helping needy

KUCHING: The State Welfare Department (JKM) has channelled over RM 67 million for more than 50,000 recipients to receive monthly financial aids across Sarawak.

This was announced by Welfare, Community Well Being, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, when handing out financial assistance and hampers to 200 recipients in conjunction with Sejambak Kasih Gawai Raya 2019 programme at Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka here in Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Rahman Yakub, yesterday.

She said the aids will be given out to 46,376 recipients who celebrate Gawai and Hari Raya to help ease their burdens.

“Recipients of the assistance will receive cash of RM100 and a hamper worth RM50, while those who unable to join today will have their RM100 assistance credited into their bank accounts,” she said.

Pointing out the increase in number of applicants from 57,047 in 2017 to 57,588 last year, Fatimah mentioned that the state will continue to assure that assistance will be given out to those in need regardless of race and religion.

“For this year, the number of recipients receiving welfare assistance under JKM continues to increase. As of April, this year, there are 56,096 recipients,” she said.

“For this year, we have already recorded 9,588 recipients up until April with a total expenditure of RM 11,836,950 from Kuching, Bau and Lundu ,” she revealed.

It is informed there are 6,967 needy people from Kuching; 3,917 (Samarahan); 4,545 (Sri Aman); 4,548 (Betong); 2,055 (Sarikei); 6,002 (Sibu); 2,840 (Mukah); 2,900 (Kapit); 3,108 (Bintulu); 3,168 (Miri); and 2,187 (Limbang) who will receive financial assistance to celebrate Gawai and Hari Raya this year.

Among those presents were Demak Laut assemblyman Dr Hazland Abang Hipni and Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman.
