SIBU: A total of RM42 million has been allocated under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) Fifth Rolling Plan (RP5) to upgrade fire and rescue infrastructure in Sarawak, as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to improve emergency response capabilities in the state.

The Malaysia Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA) director-general Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad said the allocation will support the construction of new fire stations and the continuation of several key infrastructure projects.

“Under RP5, two new fire stations – in Engkilili and Dalat – are expected to commence construction this year.

“These projects mark a significant step forward in strengthening our operational readiness, particularly in remote areas,” he said this in his text speech read by BOMBA deputy director-general (Development) Othman Abdullah during the Excellent Service Award (APC) ceremony, here today (Apr 7).

He added that several ongoing projects, including those in Sungai Asap, Tatau, and Daro, as well as the acquisition of a building for the Kota Sentosa Fire and Rescue Station, will also be given priority.

“From the RM42 million allocation, RM4.9 million will be disbursed this year to facilitate the timely implementation of these projects,” he added.

Nor Hisham called on Sarawak JBPM Director Jamri Masran and his team to closely monitor the progress of all infrastructure works to ensure they remain on track.

“These projects are critical, especially given Sarawak’s challenging geography and vast distances. Improved infrastructure will directly impact our response times and effectiveness on the ground,” he said.
