MIRI: The Sarawak government has started the implementation of a high-impact water supply project in Bukit Song, valued at RM41.1 million, aimed at enhancing water supply systems and infrastructure in the Beluru, Bekenu, Niah, and Subis areas.

Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi disclosed today that the major project, currently in its construction phase, is being executed by his ministry with the Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) serving as the implementing agency.

It has been meticulously planned to address the rising demand for water in these regions.

The development includes the construction of a booster pump station with a capacity of 3.0 million liters, a reservoir tank capable of holding 5.0 million liters, and a high-level tank in Bekenu Town with a 3.0 million-liter capacity.

Additionally, a new 31-km pipeline will be installed to enhance water distribution.

Upon its expected completion in the first quarter of 2025, the project will significantly boost clean water production, benefiting around 14,000 residents in Bekenu, Beluru, Niah, and Subis.

It is also anticipated to elevate the quality of life for the local population by ensuring a consistent and sustainable water supply.

JBALB Sarawak has emphasised its commitment to completing the project within the set timeframe, as part of the broader Sarawak Water Supply Grid system initiative.

This grid system is designed to effectively address water supply challenges across the region, providing a long-term solution to ensure a reliable and comprehensive water infrastructure for Miri and its surrounding areas.
