RM4,000 fine for concealing stolen outboard engine

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here fined a local man RM4,000 or, in default, eight months in prison for concealing a Shah Tohatsu outboard engine belonging to an elderly man last month.

Mohamad Zakaria Hairani, 42, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan to a charge under Section 414 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to seven years, or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

He was found in possession of the stolen engine belonging to a 63-year-old man at a house in Kampung Sri Kandong, Matang, around 4 am on Jan 25.

According to case details, the complainant reported to the police that his outboard engine had been stolen from the Kampung Rambungan Fishermen’s Jetty.

Seventeen days later, on Feb 13, police arrested Zakaria at a house for his alleged involvement in the theft.

Investigations confirmed that he had concealed the complainant’s stolen outboard engine.
