KUCHING: The Sarawak government has allocated grants of RM3.7 million to help 32 Roman Catholic (RC) mission schools in the Kuching and Serian districts.
Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil, who is the advisor to the Mission Authority, Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kuching, said the grants disbursed through the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor), is to help mission schools to manage, improve and upgrade the infrastructure needs of the schools.
He said Unifor had always helped promote or assist and upgrade some missionary school facilities, especially in rural areas.
“Sarawak is the only state which has established Unifor and this goes to show that the government is very people-centric.
“At the same time, we deliver what we have promised, especially to the local communities,” he said at the hand-over of cheques ceremony for mission schools for the year 2022 – Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kuching at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here, today.
Dr Penguang hoped the allocation given would be wisely used by the schools.
“I hope the various schools which are given the allocation will use the money wisely to buy the facilities needed to improve their teaching and assist those who are in need.
“It is important that we should work together as Sarawakians, especially in promoting and educating our children for the future generation,” he said.
The RM3.7 million grants will benefit over 8,000 students in both Kuching and Serian districts, two secondary schools (SMK) and 30 primary schools (SK).
Also present were Deputy State Secretary (Administration) Datuk Buckland Bangik, Unifor director Datuk Jack Aman Luat and RC Archbishop of Kuching Simon Poh and Sarawak Council of Christian Schools chairman Douglas Telajan.
