KUCHING: Sarawak police recorded the biggest success in their war against drugs this year with the arrest of two men at a house at Stutong here on September 21 at 1.30pm.
With the arrest of the two men aged about 27 years old, the police also seized 993 rounds of ecstasy pills and 11 kilogrammes of drugs worth RM3.4 million.
Sarawak Deputy Police Chief, DCP Dato’ Pahlawan Mohd Dzuraidi Bin Ibrahim revealed this at a press conference here yesterday.
He said a police team from the Narcotic Crime Department and the Sarawak Police Contingent Headquarters raided the house at Stutong at 1.30pm on Sept 21.
Mohd Dzuraidi said both men were arrested under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 which carried the Death Penalty if found guilty. He also said both men were remanded from Sept 21 until Sept 29 to aid further investigations.
He added one of the men had three criminal records related to drugs and had also been jailed.
“This is the biggest seizure for the Sarawak’s contingent in the war against drugs this year and the value of the drugs that were seized is approximately RM3.4 million,” he said.
Mohd Dzuraidi said the duo had been active in distributing drugs from early this year and the police had been making efforts to detect them.
Asked if the duo was linked to any syndicate, Mohd Dzuraidi replied that the police were still investigating.
On the origin of the drugs, he said: “We suspect they were brought in from outside the country and would be brought out of Sarawak to a neigbhouring country.”
He said the drugs were packaged in packets of Chinese herbal tea.
According to him, the premises was used by the duo to pack and distribute the drugs.
On the drugs, he added that they were enough for as many as 20,000 addicts.
“If calculated, an addict will use 0.3 gram only. And this weighs 11.6 kilogrammes,” he said.
From January to September 19 this year, Sarawak police arrested a total of 5,012 persons for possessions and distribution of drugs.
