KUCHING: Reconstruction work to upgrade the drainage system in the residential area near Mile 9 kicked off today (April 8) in a move to address the long-standing flood woes affecting over 300 houses, particularly in Taman Emas and Taman Paradise.
Batu Kitang assemblyman Datuk Lo Khere Chiang said the RM2.5 million project is targeted for completion by October this year.
“The project will be carried out starting from the junction at Taman Emas, and it is hoped that it will help reduce the flooding problems that residents here have endured for more than four years,” he said during a press conference at the site.
Lo expressed appreciation to Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi for approving the project after it was brought to his attention six months ago.

“And within that time, he directed the Public Works Department (PWD) to begin construction,” he added.
Lo also thanked residents for their patience, noting that tackling flooding is a complex issue requiring substantial funding.
“However, the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government has been doing a tremendous job in allocating funds for this project,” he added.
Meanwhile, PWD Sarawak assistant divisional engineer (operation) Reman Adop said the project will involve the demolition of the existing drain.
“We will be expanding the size of the drain from 1.8 metres to 2.1 metres, including replacing the culvert up to 36 metres.
“The new drain will be straighter to better divert the water flow, so we are hopeful the project will be completed within the given timeline, or even earlier,” he said.
