MUKAH: One of the major crowd-pulling activities here, the Mukah Regatta, is expected to be held this year although the date has yet to be fixed.
“The fund for Mukah to stage the regatta this year has been put aside. However, the date the event is going to be held has not been decided yet,” said Balingian State Assemblyman, Abdul Yakub Haji Arbi.
He also pointed out that it is very costly to stage the regatta. Hence, it could only be held once in every two or three years.
Yakub said this when officiating at the presentation of Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) totaling RM130,550 to 452 fishermen under the Mukah/Oya Area Fishermen Association (MOAFA) at Dewan Suarah Mesra here, yesterday.
On the forth coming election which is just three weeks away, he urged the people to make the right choice and not to gamble their future on uncertain promises.
“Of course, we cannot force anyone to choose but we have to go for the candidate that delivers. The present government has come up with various efforts and at the same time tirelessly looking for solutions to lighten the burden of the people especially when the cost of living continues to rise,” he said.
Yakub added that Prime Minister Datuk Patinggi Najib Tun Razak had been very fair and the introduction of allowances and various assistance for the fishermen were initiated by him in 2008 and did not only benefitted those in West Malaysia but also in Sarawak and Sabah.
In his speech, Yakub also invited the people of Mukah to come in full force to the annual Mukah Kaul Festival 2018 which will kick-off with Kaul Serahang Kakan this weekend.
Also present at the function were Nolin Gendang, who represented Mukah District Officer, a representative from the local Fishery Development Board of Malaysia (LKIM) Region II, Muhd Faris Ruslim, Walikota of Dalat/Mukah District Council, Haji Kadir Haji Jamil and MOAFA Chairman, Ali Haji Hamid.
