KUCHING: Since 2018, the Sarawak government has spent RM10.75 million on anti-drug programmes, with positive results in combating drug abuse, according to Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.

Fatimah stressed that the funds were invested to raise awareness, reduce demand for drugs, and improve recovery efforts, which has led to a significant success in the state’s fight against drugs.

“One indicator of success is the reduction in the number of students involved in drug abuse.

“Awareness campaigns and regular urine testing in schools have helped identify students who are then referred for counselling, with positive recovery outcomes,” she said.

She said this at a press conference after chairing a meeting conference of the One-Stop Committee (OSC) to combat drugs and substance abuse (MIDS) Bil. 1/2025 at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here today.

Fatimah added that the cultural change in the community’s perception of drug addiction is also a major achievement.

“Unlike in the past, more people are now coming forward to seek help without shame.

“Those in recovery are now proudly sharing their journeys, which signifies a change in community attitudes,” she added.

Fatimah also asserted that the growing confidence in seeking help is an important outcome of the government’s efforts.

“Individuals who were once ashamed of their addictions are now openly discussing their recovery and plans to remain drug-free,” she stated.

She added that the Sarawak government has also exceeded international standards for help-seeking behaviour, with Sarawak exceeding United Nations’ (UN) expectations in tackling drug addiction.

Another success, said Fatimah, is that through the anti-drug campaign, the state government managed to cut off the supply of drugs, which has been supported by significant enforcement efforts.

“Despite the progress, we will continue to implement efforts to control drug abuse, ensuring that drug abuse remains a manageable issue in Sarawak.

“With continued efforts and a clear focus on awareness, support and enforcement, we are optimistic about Sarawak’s continued success in addressing drug-related problems,” she added.
