MIRI: The Sarawak government has agreed to bear the cost for rewiring of a 170-door longhouse in Long Laput, Baram with an estimated cost of RM1 million.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg acceded to a request from Orang Ulu paramount chief, Temengong Elizabeth Deng during the groundbreaking ceremony for the temenggong’s new longhouse in Long Laput, Baram on Sunday (Oct 31).
“There is also a request to build a house to store the ethnic’s heritage treasures costing about RM500,000. Ok lah, I will also approve this,” Abang Johari said.
The chief minister said that he will allocate RM500,000 to Highland Development Agency (HDA) to construct an agriculture hub in the Middle Baram area as proposed by the Middle Baram Development Committee (MBDC).
“So, this is my buah tangan (gifts) that I give to you and I will come here again to Baram and Mulu not because of the election.
“But, this is part of my job. I come to see what I can do for the people. As for the election, I do not know when it will be held yet,” he said.
Meanwhile, Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said that the chief minister’s visit to Long Laput showed his concern for the people.
“With a special gift from Abang Johari, I am confident that the community here will continue to stand behind him because it has been proven that Abang Johari is not only able to develop the area here but also the whole of Sarawak,” he said.
