MIRI: The Sarawak Customs Department seized illicit cigarettes worth RM1.84 million after a syndicate’s plan to conceal the items in an abandoned premises within an oil palm plantation was uncovered last month.
Sarawak Customs Department director Norizan Yahya said the Miri Land Operations Unit raided a premises, about 16km from the city centre, at 10 am on Jan 15.
“The operation led to the discovery of 2,354,400 cigarettes of various brands stored inside a locked room.
“The estimated value of the seized goods is RM267,216.00, while the duties and taxes involved amount to approximately RM1,580,625.60,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 and Section 74(1)(a) of the Excise Act 1976 for attempting to evade excise duty through fraudulent means.
The department emphasised that the successful operation was the result of strategic collaboration between RMCD Sarawak’s units, branches, and divisions.
“This success demonstrates the Sarawak Customs Department’s commitment to efficient and high-integrity governance in enforcement activities at all levels.
“Our efforts are further strengthened by advanced technology, which enhances revenue collection, minimises leakages, and combats the smuggling of prohibited goods, ensuring more effective enforcement of the law,” he said.
Norizan also urged the public to assist in combating smuggling activities, particularly involving cigarettes, alcohol, fireworks, drugs, vehicles, and other contraband, while advising them against engaging in such offences.
“Smuggling not only leads to national revenue losses but also threatens security and public welfare,” he added.
