KUCHING: The city pulsated with excitement as thousands gathered along the Kuching waterfront to ring in the New Year.
Families, friends and couples embraced the festive atmosphere, enjoying live music, vibrant performances, and the anticipation of the dazzling fireworks display.
“We’ve been here since the afternoon,” said Juliana Ramli, 42, who brought her children to experience the vibrant event.
“It’s not every day we get to see celebrities up close. Watching them perform, enjoying the fireworks, and spending quality time with my family have made this an unforgettable experience.”
Hailing from Matang Ria, the family arrived early to secure a prime spot and soak in the festive mood.
“This event makes it easy for families to come out and enjoy themselves. It’s something we look forward to every year,” Juliana added.
As 2025 approached, she prayed for abundant sustenance, good health for her entire family and continuous success in all that they do.
Joining the revelry was Ahmad Akeel Afwan Abang Abd Samad, 21, who arrived early to secure a good viewing spot.
“If you want to wait for the countdown, you need to come early because there will definitely be a crowd and traffic jams with cars and motorcycles are unavoidable,” he said.
“The countdown symbolises that we’ve made it through the year, going through both our highs and lows,” he added.
“I don’t have big hopes for 2025 — just to always strive to stay positive and calm in all matters and challenges I face. Most importantly, I hope I won’t be single anymore,” he said.
Hayatun Nufus, 35, celebrated the New Year with her family, prioritising their comfort.
“We left the house after Maghrib to make it more comfortable for the kids,” said Hayatun.
“The weather during the day was too hot, but the evening is cooler and more suitable for bringing the children out.”
For Hayatun, creating special memories for her children was the highlight of the evening.
“The main reason we’re here is to let the kids see the fireworks and experience the crowd. It’s something they can remember and look back on as part of their childhood.”
While not an annual tradition for her family, she said that their participation depended on various factors.
“This is not the first time, but it’s not something we do every year. With young kids, we have to consider things like the weather.”
Looking ahead to 2025, Hayatun prayed for good health for everyone, noting the many illnesses prevalent nowadays.
Additionally, she hoped that we could all strive to become better versions of ourselves in the New Year.
