KUCHING: Local political leaders appear to agree that Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal has made the right move in dissolving the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) to resolve the political impasse in the state.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing and Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah both agreed that Shafie made the correct decision in recommending the dissolution of the DUN to Sabah Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin yesterday.

“Let Sabahans decide whom they want to be their chief minister,” Masing said when contacted by New Sarawak Tribune.

He said that Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin should do the same when the opposition led by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had tried to topple him.

“Let Malaysians decide, once and for all, whom they want to be their prime minister,” he pointed out.

Meanwhile, Abdul Karim also believed that the dissolution was the best solution to resolve the political impasse in Sabah.

“What Mohd Shafie did is the correct move and he is putting it to the rakyat to determine who should lead the next state government,” he said.

He noted that Sarawak politics had an almost similar scenario in 1987 known as the ‘Ming Court’ crisis.

“Hopefully, Sabahans will make a good decision in the snap election and erase all uncertainties about who actually has their support,” he said.

Earlier yesterday, Mohd Shafie announced the dissolution of the Sabah Legislative Assembly paving the way for a state election which must be held within 60 days.

This move was made after several elected representatives had switched sides in an effort to topple the Warisan-led state government.
