KUCHING: The Dual Language Programme (DLP), implemented six years ago, needs to be reassessed to evaluate its effectiveness.
Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, said the evaluation is necessary to identify shortcomings and challenges faced by stakeholders, ensuring the programme truly benefits students.
“I have also met with teachers and asked about the implementation of the DLP in their respective schools.
“Unfortunately, the feedback often highlights persistent confusion and challenges.
“Meanwhile, most students are unable to provide convincing responses about their experiences with the DLP,” he said during his speech at the “DLP Sarawak Intervention Programme: Revitalising the High Immersive Programme Workshop for School Leaders 2024”, held at Raia Hotel and Convention Centre yesterday (Dec 10).
As such, Annuar called on all stakeholders to work together to reassess the DLP, which has been in place for nearly six years.
He added that his ministry is also considering implementing specialised courses, such as English for Specific Purposes (ESP), for teachers teaching Science and Mathematics in English.
“This approach will help enhance teaching effectiveness and ensure the DLP achieves its goals,” he explained.
He expressed hope that the workshop would provide meaningful input to strengthen the implementation of the DLP in Sarawak, ultimately elevating the state’s education system to greater heights.
Also present were the Head of the Primary Education Section at the Ministry of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development, Wes Mirid; Deputy Director of the School Management Sector, State Education Department (JPNS), Dr Les Met; Deputy Director of the Learning Sector at JPNS, Siti Zulaiha Ibrahim; and other distinguished guests.
