Retaining walls to facilitate coastal development

KUCHING: Having retaining walls, dykes and levees built from Tambirat in Asajaya, Sebangan to Sebuyau at a cost of RM657 million is a great effort on the part of the state government to protect the shoreline and people from the ravages of the sea.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said as such the walls will have positive impact on the locals especially those living close to the sea as saltwater would be prevented from reaching agricultural lands.

“It will definitely have some impact in terms of development of agriculture and roads,” he said.

Abang Johari noted that the Block F construction in Sebuyau was about 60 percent complete.

“Due to this, there has been no seepage of saltwater into Sebuyau area,” he said after officiating at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Sebuyau new township’s housing project yesterday.

Earlier, he attended a briefing on the projects carried out under the Integrated Regional Samarahan Development Agency (IRSDA) headed by Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Abdul Karim said that the retaining wall project consisted of four packages in Sebuyau and one in Asajaya. All are in the process of being built.

Meanwhile, Assistant Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Julaihi Narawi said that the retaining wall project in Sebuyau covered packages A, D, E and F.

“Block A comprises two phases of which the first phase has already been awarded to the contractor. Block D and E each comprises one phase and has also been awarded. While Block F has three phases, two of the phases have been awarded.

“These are expected to be completed in 24 months for each of the packages,” he said.
