THE sanitary landfill located within the Opar rural growth centre (RGC), which is to be shared by Lundu and Bau district councils, has been approved under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP).

Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Penguang Manggil said to date, most, if not all, of the preliminary work had already been carried out.

“The timely completion of this sanitary landfill is critical to both district councils.

“This is because the existing dump sites in both councils are not only not environmentally-friendly, but they have also outlived their lifespan,” he said today.

In view of this and the insufficient funding and ceiling approved under the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP), he said the Lundu District Council, as the project proponent, has resubmitted the project and requested for a sum of RM37 million as a continuation project under the 12MP.

“The approved ceiling for the construction of the landfill under 11MP was only RM5 million.

“The allocation was spent on perimeter and topographic survey works at RM300,000; land and crop compensation at RM2.5 million; soil investigation at RM100,000; upgrading of the 1-km access road at RM1 million; and consultant fees at RM1 million,” he clarified.
