KUCHING: The people have been reminded to be sensitive towards and respect the diverse communities to main the country’s harmony.

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing noted that under the wise leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, attention has been given to all ethnicities, religions, and cultures in Sarawak.

“The spirit of mutual respect and tolerance among different ethnic groups has always been there.

“Therefore, I want to remind some individuals out there not to exploit racial and religious sentiments to incite the people,” he said in a Facebook post.

The Bintulu MP and Dudong assemblyman said intercultural marriages are now common among the society in the nation.

“If we cannot maintain sensitivity among the various ethnic groups, how can we hope to live in harmony?” he said.

Tiong added that the spirit of togetherness in Sarawak can serve as a model for the people in Malaya.

“For example, the harmony within longhouses enables all ethnic groups to live under one roof, regardless of their backgrounds.

“These qualities are what make Malaysia unique in the eyes of the world, and let us ensure they continue to see the diverse customs and cultures of our nation,” he said.

On another note, Tiong said the Sarawak government will remain steadfast in upholding the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) as its foundation of governance.

“The state will also continue to advocate the rights and interests of the people of Sarawak,” he said.
