KAPIT: Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang has urged everyone to remain vigilant and avoid travelling in areas with high water levels here.

He said torrential rain at dawn on Wednesday led to a devastating flash flood here, severely affecting several areas and leaving the community grappling with destruction and loss.

Among the tragedies resulting from the disaster was the loss of Pastor Bangau Amping, who tragically perished when his car became trapped in a roadside drain overwhelmed by floodwaters.

“I am also deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Pastor Bangau in an unfortunate accident. Reports indicate that his car was trapped at a roadside drain overwhelmed by high water levels.

“On behalf of the people of Kapit, I extend my heartfelt condolences to Pastor Bangau’s family and loved ones. We share in your grief and are here to support you in every possible way,” he said.

The relentless downpour caused water levels to rise alarmingly, inundating areas such as Sg. Amang, Rh Dennis, Rh Tatai Emas, and Melatai. Critical facilities, including schools and government quarters, were submerged, disrupting daily life for countless families.

Adding to the chaos, a landslide at Rh William Ubu, Sg Sut, caused significant damage to the longhouse, raising concerns for the safety of its residents.

“In light of these incidents, I want the relevant authorities to investigate the root causes of this flash flood,” he said.
