KUCHING: The state government will give substantial allocation for research activities, including Artificial intelligence (AI) in Sarawak.

Although Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg did not disclose the exact amount of the allocation, he assured that it will be included in the state’s next budget.

“In the next budget, we will of course allocate some more funds for research activities. I don’t want to mention the amount yet but we will give substantial allocation for research, including AI,” he said.

He was officiating at the Sarawak Research and Development Council (SRDC) 5th anniversary dinner at Pullman Hotel here last night (Oct 10).

Touching on the programme, he said the establishment of SRDC complemented the third pillar of Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) that requires the state to boost its research works, adding that SRDC’s establishment marks a significant milestone for Sarawak’s research and development agenda.

Stressing research underpins progress, which drives economic growth and prosperity, to a state or nation, he said: “SRDC was set up to enable effective coordination of research activities, facilitate and attract meaningful collaborations between local and international research institutions, and enhance research and development that will contribute to the socio-economic development of Sarawak.

“We want to create a conducive and supportive environment for the advancement of research, knowledge enhancement and human capital development throughout Sarawak.

“We want to drive Sarawak’s research and development in science and technology thus enhancing discovery, catalysing innovation, scientific excellence, and commercial development of discoveries.”

Over the past five years, the state government has provided research support to the universities and research agencies in Sarawak, he added.

He said, through the SRDC Research Grant schemes, the Sarawak government has provided funding of up to RM14 million.

“We have seen some successes coming out from these ventures, we have to date, generated new knowledge through 38 publications arising from the funded projects.

“To facilitate and provide for a vibrant and engaging research ecosystem, the. government, through SRDC, has established three subsidiaries, the Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD) Semiconductor, Sarawak Infectious Disease Centre (SIDC) and the Sarawak Science Centre.

“SRDC, together with these subsidiaries of SMD and SIDC, have forged strong linkages with industry leaders and research institutes worldwide.
