KUCHING: Armed Forces Family Housings (RKAT) which are badly damaged and over 40 years old will be repaired by early next year.
Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu said the process would commence at old camps such as Penrissen Camp where most of its residential blocks had been badly damaged and unsafe to occupy.
“The ministry will look at pressing needs first in implementing the repairs.
“If the existing allocation is inadequate, the ministry will give additional repair funds for the camps needing them. As such, today I myself come down to the field to look at the condition to determine the problems that must be settled first,’’ he said.
He said this to reporters during a working visit to Penrissen Camp, 10th Mile and Army Eastern Field Command Headquarters at Muara Tuang Camp here yesterday.
Mohamad Sabu said the move was to boost the welfare of the Malaysian Armed Forces personnel and retirees in tandem with the current economic condition.
According to the current status of RKAT at Penrissen Camp, three of the 10 residential blocks were unsafe for occupation with damages to the piping systems and walls.
Mohammad Sabu arrived at Penrissen Camp at 2 pm accompanied by the Defence Ministry secretary-general Datuk Halimi Abd Manaf.
Among those present to greet him on arrival were commander of the 1st Infantry Division, Datuk Toh Choon Siang and Ministry of Defence director-general (Development), Brig-Gen Malek Razak Sulaiman.
The RKAT at Penrissen Camp was established in 1972, occupied by officers and military personnel on duty in and around the city. – Bernama
