KUCHING: Singapore-Sarawak cooperation in the distribution of renewable energy and carbon trading are two matters that were brought up for discussion between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his Singaporean counterpart on yesterday (Jan 30).
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg revealed this when interviewed by reporters before leaving for Sarawak late Monday afternoon.
He was among members of Anwar’s entourage to meet Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in Singapore.
Anwar arrived in Singapore on Monday morning for his first official visit to the Island Republic since being appointed as Prime Minister.
In the discussion, Anwar raised the issue of the proposed export of electricity from Sarawak to Singapore which will also involve the approval of the Indonesian government.
The undersea electric cable from Sarawak to Singapore will involve a distance of 720 KM where at least 70 percent of the route is in Indonesian waters through the Muri-Midai corridor.
The Premier said that if it becomes a reality, the project with a cost of up to SGD 8 billion where Sarawak would have the potential to export up to 1,000 MW of energy to Singapore.
Anwar also touched on the potential of carbon trading cooperation between the private sector in Singapore and Sarawak, said the Premier.
The collaboration is currently still in the discussion stage between the private sector of Singapore and Sarawak.
