KUCHING: The Education Ministry has been told to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) before considering introducing khat (a form of Malay-Arabic calligraphy) for Year Four schoolchildren.
Sarawak Patriots Association (SPA) chairman Datuk John Lau (pic) said he felt the recognition of UEC had a higher priority than learning to write Jawi.
“SPA has nothing against the learning of a new skill but it needs to be optional and not compulsory,” he said.
He said the federal government had promised to recognise UEC qualifications since 2015.
“But it is four years now. We have yet to hear official words from the federal authority,” he said.
Lau stressed Sarawak government had already recognised UEC qualification which was also recognised internationally by high ranking universities.
“We want the federal government to keep its words to recognise UEC and offer other language skill as optional to school children.”
