KUCHING: The Chinese community leaders particularly in Batu Kitang constituency have been urged to use social media platforms more often to reach out to the people.
Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang gave the advice by encouraging the community leaders to be better versed with the internet and social media because it is seen as an important tool to communicate with the people and to get updates on any issues faced.
“Our young people today are into social media, and the internet and social media are now the norm for everybody to transmit messages,” he said when officiating at the installation of new Kota Padawan Kapitan at Hung Fong Seafood restaurant, Mile 10 on Sunday evening (Dec 27).
He said community leaders were able to serve the people better by making use of social media platforms.
Earlier, 65-year-old Kapitan Chin Hon Jun received his official letter of appointment as the Chinese Kapitan for Kota Padawan from Lo.
Kapitan Chin will be replacing 81-year-old Kapitan Chong Chen, and will carry out his duty beginning Jan 1 next year until Dec 31, 2022.
“I want to congratulate our new Kapitan Chin for taking over the responsibilities of being a community leader,” he said.
While welcoming the new Kapitan, Lo also thanked the outgoing Kapitan Chong for his 20 years of service for the people in Kota Padawan.
“During Chong’s service, he has proven to serve the people well; he is a man that goes around without being asked and that is the kind of character we should all emulate.
“He is a role model for everybody. And I hope Kapitan Chin will take the initiative and learn all the good things from Kapitan Chong and performs his duties the best he can,” he said.
Meanwhile, Kapitan Chin also conveyed his appreciation to those who had placed the trust in him and he pledged to do his very best to serve the people.
“I hope we can work together with the other community leaders for the betterment of our community. I can’t do it alone, but I need your cooperation and support,” he said.
At the event, Lo also presented a cheque amounting to RM10,000 to Kota Padawan village security and development committee (JKKK).
Also present were Temenggong Datuk Tan Joo Phoi, Penghulu Lim Eng Huat, and Padawan district officer Rangen Jamang.
