KUCHING: The rising number of road accidents in Sarawak is alarming.
Minister for Transport Sarawak, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, has reintroduced traffic games to raise road safety awareness among schoolchildren.
“This initiative by the Ministry of Transport, Sarawak in collaboration with the Sarawak Road Safety Council will serve as an educational programme where participating young school students will gain experience on real roads and adhere to real traffic regulations,” it said through a statement today.
On June 24, the Ministry of Transport, Sarawak organised the Sarawak Traffic Games Syllabus Lab at Raia Hotel and Convention Centre here.
“The main objective of the lab is to discuss and develop a comprehensive syllabus for the traffic games where the goal is to educate young students on real road conditions and instil the importance of adhering to traffic regulations from an early age,” it said.
“This one-day lab was officiated by Deputy Minister for Transport, Sarawak (Aviation and Road), Datuk Dr Jerip Susil; and participated by officers from various department such as Road Transport Department Sarawak, Royal Malaysian Police, District Education Department, Public Works Department Sarawak, and city councils from Kuching, Sri Aman, Sarikei, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri.”
According to Dr Jerip, by engaging the youth in traffic games and practical road safety education, it is one of the efforts to reduce the number of road accidents and fatalities caused by careless driving.
