SIBU: Welding workers successfully averted a potential disaster by swiftly extinguishing a fire on a ship named ‘Ocean Pride’ on Saturday evening (Dec 7).

Firefighters from Sungai Merah and Sibu stations were dispatched to Gimhwak Shipyard Sdn Bhd at Jalan Sungai Bidut, about 25km away, following a distress call at 5.10 pm.

A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said that the fire had damaged five per cent of the ship’s engine room and a used goods store.

However, upon arrival, the flames had already been extinguished by the shipyard’s welding workers using three fire extinguishers.

The team conducted ventilation work through the store room’s entrance and monitored the situation to ensure no risk of reignition.

Once the situation was deemed safe, the team concluded the operation at 6.30pm.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
