KUCHING: English news editor Daryll Law, 28, hopes TVS will put Sarawak on the world map by showcasing all that the state has to offer – from its cultural heritage to its vast array of products.
Stationed at TVS English news desk, he aims to create a content comparable to those of Business Insider and South China Morning Post, which are among the renowned news platforms.
“I want the TVS news team to be a trusted brand and a benchmark. Not only for Sarawakians, but also for the nation as a whole. Hopefully, we will be able to conquer the Nusantara region in the long run,” he said when met by New Sarawak Tribune on Tuesday (Oct 27).
Citing Channel News Asia (CNA) as an example, he said that the English-language news channel based in Singapore was internationally renowned.
“I hope we can achieve that,” he said.
Law pointed out that sheer ambition alone would not suffice as hard work was necessary to achieve all these goals.
He also hoped more individuals would get involved in the creative industry as well as the news industry, be it broadcasting or journalism.
“TVS already provides the platform; it is providing opportunities for locals to go far in this industry,” he said.
Elaborating on his own experience, Law said he made his debut in the publishing industry when he first joined New Sarawak Tribune as an intern in 2012. He stayed there for three years before moving on to Borneo Post.
After that, he returned to New Sarawak Tribune before joining TVS in August this year.
“I have minimal experience in broadcasting, so this new role is an interesting challenge and a good experience. For me, it is a never-ending learning journey,” he said.
Law also thanked his team for being committed and disciplined despite facing a lack of manpower.
According to him, three English news segments aired on TVS daily at 1pm, 5pm, and 11.30pm.
“Global news is aired at 1pm. For the 5pm slot, we cover Sarawak news, national news, and also some global news. The first two segments are 15 minutes long, but the nightline news segment at 11.30pm runs for half an hour,” he explained.
