KUCHING: The proposed construction of a new Kuching International Airport at Tanjung Embang in Asayaja has sparked significant discussion among various stakeholders.

It is aimed at addressing growing air traffic demand and promoting development in the surrounding region.

New Sarawak tribune gathered feedback from different individuals who gave their perspectives, hopes and concerns on whether Tanjung Embang is the right choice for Kuching’s new international airport.

MOHAMAD MOKTAR BUJANG, 56

I think it’s a good idea since Tanjung Embang is less crowded and has the potential for development. It could help reduce congestion at the current airport. It will bring job opportunities and improve infrastructure, like better roads and facilities, which will definitely benefit the people living nearby. But there might be issues with land acquisition and environmental impact, especially if the area has sensitive ecosystems or local heritage sites.

MOHAMAD MOKTAR BUJANG, 56, BUSINESS OWNER:

In my opinion, it’s quite far from the city, and that might inconvenience travellers, especially tourists. For businesses in the area, it could attract more customers and investment. But it might take years before it truly benefits everyone. The main concern would be accessibility. If proper transport infrastructure isn’t developed, it might discourage people from using the new airport.

SITI HAJAR MUSA, 31, HOUSEWIFE:

I’m concerned about the environmental impact. Building an airport in a relatively untouched area might disrupt local ecosystems and wildlife. It could benefit communities economically, but the long-term environmental costs might outweigh the short-term gains. Environmental degradation, noise pollution, and the displacement of local communities could be significant challenges.

NURUL IZZATI SHAFIQA TAHA, 26, MARKETING EXECUTIVE:

It sounds promising if the new airport is modern and well-equipped, but its distance from the city centre might be inconvenient for travellers. It could open up more travel opportunities and boost tourism in the surrounding areas, especially if linked with proper transportation networks. Traffic congestion during construction and a lack of efficient public transport to and from the new airport could make it less appealing.
