KUCHING: The Mayor of Kuching City South (MBKS), Datuk Wee Hong Seng, has urged the public not to speculate about the recent incident involving the collapse of a building structure along Jalan Padungan here.
“Please do not make any statement about the cause of the incident.
“It is not fair to the owner, and it is also not fair to the investigation,” he said.
“We have now cordoned off the area to ensure that all debris is contained, which will assist with the investigation as well,” he said in a statement today.
Wee assured that the council always prioritises the safety and well-being of the area, and expressed his gratitude to all the authorities involved in handling the incident earlier this morning.
Meanwhile, Sarawak Public Works Department (PWD) director Dr Cassidy Morris in a statement said that they will be providing forensic services to the MBKS following the incident.
“As the main technical agency of the Sarawak government, PWD Sarawak is committed to playing a key role in helping to identify the cause of the incident.
“In this regard, a special technical team comprising forensic engineers, structural experts, and PWD Sarawak technical investigation officers will be mobilised to the site to carry out an assessment of the affected structure,” he said.
He added that the investigation will include site analysis, structural engineering evaluation, and the collection of physical evidence that may help determine the exact cause of the structural failure.
“PWD top priority is public safety, and all findings from the investigation will be submitted to MBKS for further action, including recommendations for remedial work if necessary,” he said.
He further added that PWD Sarawak will continue to play an active role in strengthening structural safety and the resilience of public infrastructure across the State.
“I would like to assure the public that this investigation will be conducted with full professionalism, transparency, and based on verified technical facts.
“We must always ensure that every piece of infrastructure developed is safe for the people and sustainable for the future,” he said.
