KUCHING: The public has been urged to refrain from spreading unfounded rumours following claims on social media that rising water levels were caused by Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) releasing water from the Bakun Hydroelectric Plant (HEP).
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas dismissed the allegations, stating that no such water release had taken place.
“There was a post on social media, accusing SEB of releasing water at Bakun. There is no such thing taking place,” he said.
He said this to reporters after visiting the Pan Borneo Highway construction site at the Jakar junction in Sarikei today (Mar 22).
Uggah, who is also the Infrastructure and Port Development Minister, assured the public that SEB adheres strictly to standard operating procedures (SOPs) when managing water releases to prevent risks to downstream communities.
“So, we hope the public will not spread rumours and then put a bad picture on the agency,” he said.
Meanwhile, SEB, through its virtual customer service assistant ‘Carina’, addressed the matter in a Facebook post yesterday, urging the public to be cautious of false information circulating online.
“Water reservoir levels at Bakun HEP are at safe operating levels. No controlled water release is being exercised at the Bakun reservoir,” they said.
The state-owned utility company also advised the public to rely on SEB’s official website and social media pages for accurate updates.
