Comply with labour provisions, employers told
KUCHING: Private sector employers must comply with the provisions for employees who are required to work on gazetted public holidays.
The Department of Labour Sarawak, in a statement yesterday said if an employee is required to work during the day of the substituted public holiday, the employee shall be paid at a rate of the public holiday as provided in the Labour Ordinance (Sarawak Cap. 76).
The statement was in reference to the declaration of July 30, 2019 as a public holiday in conjunction with the coronation of the 16th Yang Di-Pertuan Agong.
Paragraph 104(1)(b) Labour Ordinance (Sarawak Cap. 76) provides that any additional holidays gazetted by the Government is a paid public holiday that is compulsory to be given to any private sector employees covered under the Ordinance but employers may grant the employees any other day as paid public holiday in substitution for the additional public holiday.
