KUCHING: Bishop of the Anglican Church in Sarawak and Brunei, the Right Reverend Datuk Danald Jute, is of the view that the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) should be elevated from its current status of ‘unit’ to a more prominent status of ‘department’.
“This will augur well for the very important role it is playing and the significant needs it is meeting,” he said when contacted yesterday (August 11).
He said that whatever the reason behind Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) Youth’s recent statement hitting out at the Unifor Complex, it was regrettable.
Earlier, PSB Youth had questioned the state government’s rationale for allocating RM70 million for the construction of the Unifor Complex.
Danald said that, if anything, the status of Unifor needed to be further enhanced and elevated.
Meanwhile, he expressed appreciation for the Sarawak government’s initiative in establishing Unifor.
“It has not only helped with the physical building of houses of worship, but more importantly, in the building and enhancing of respectful and honourable co-existence amongst all.
“I would love to see more financial allocations to assist all recognised houses of worship,” he said.
He added that the federal government should also do the same to support all religious groups, and not discriminate against any.
He said that Malaysia would become a far better nation when all were treated equally.
