KUCHING: The Sarawak Malay Culture Foundation Charitable Trust (AKYBMS) has been organising several programmes to commemorate the struggles of independence fighter Rosli Dhobi and Rukun 13.

Among the programmes were the ‘SAMAhaul Ke-72 Rosli Dhobi dan Rukun 13’ at the AKYBMS surau here on Wednesday (March 2).

During the ceremony, yasin and tahlil prayers were recited for Rosli Dhobi, Abang Rambli Deli, Morshidi Sidek and Bujang Suntung.

At the same time, AKYBMS also held a talk titled ‘SAMAceramah 2022: Rosli Dhobi and Rukun 13’ at the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) hall in Petra Jaya here, on Thursday (March 3).

Three historians were invited to share on Rosli Dhobi’s struggles as well as a comprehensive coverage of the bloody events that ensued.

Erma Zuraima

A participant, Erma Zuraima, said the story of Rosli Dhobi’s fight for Sarawak’s independence from its colonial masters should be remembered.

“Through this programme, the target group will be able to understand more about the events as well as increase the spirit of patriotism.”

Yusuf Jalli

Another participant, Yusuf Jalli, said such programme was important to create awareness about “our national heroes defending the fate of Sarawak in the past.”

“History is very important to society, but the younger generation now lacks understanding, and are even not interested in delving into the struggles carried out by our own independence fighters.

“Such a programme should be held so that the spirit of patriotism can be instilled in the younger generation.”

Salmah Aha

For Salmah Aha, she said the programme provided an opportunity for students, government departments, non-governmental organisations and community leaders “to trace the history related to our country.”

“Besides that, we can also know in depth the sacrifices of past leaders who tried their best to free the people from colonial subjugation.”
