SARIKEI: Sibu, identified as the largest central zone of Sarawak with numerous rivers, is prone to floods, according to Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) director Datuk Khirudin Drahman.

During a visit to Sarikei Bomba on Thursday (Dec 14), he stressed the need for preparedness and community involvement to mitigate the impact of disasters in the area.

He acknowledged the susceptibility of Sibu to floods and flash floods due to heavy rainfall and rising water levels in rivers and seas. He highlighted the importance of collaboration with the community to alleviate concerns during such emergencies.

He underscored the significance of a comprehensive approach, especially in regions with hilly geographical conditions and abundant rivers. As the northeast monsoon approaches, Sarawak Bomba is gearing up by identifying potential disaster ‘hotspots’ and landslide-prone areas.

“This comprehensive approach is very important to reduce the risk of loss of life and property. With this preparedness, we can reduce the impact, especially in terms of the topography of the area,” he explained.

“There is also a need for coordination among agencies under the division’s disaster management committee, focusing on areas prone to landslides, road closures, flooding, and Temporary Transfer Centres (PPS).”

Regulatory measures and assistance from all involved agencies are crucial for the smooth distribution of assets, equipment, and personnel during operations, he added.

Khirudin urged all stakeholders, including community leaders, to be environmentally sensitive and understand their roles when dealing with disasters.

Also present were Sibu Bomba chief Andy Alie and Sarikei Bomba chief Mahmudin Narudin.
