KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has encouraged intellectuals from Simanggang to organise an economic forum aimed at identifying and tapping into more economic opportunities in the area.
With ongoing infrastructure development in the region, Abang Johari called on the local community to hold a proactive forum to explore and expand existing economic activities in Simanggang.
He cited the example of using pumped hydro technology to generate electricity for the area — a method widely adopted in countries like Australia, which is recognised for its expertise in this field.
“I’m sharing this with all of you so that we can find ways to boost economic activities in Simanggang.
“That’s why I strongly recommend organising an economic forum in both Sri Aman and Simanggang, as these areas have a key role to play in the new economic era,” said Abang Johari during the Majlis Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri Anak Perantau Simanggang held at Dewan HIKMAH, here today (Apr 12).
He added that while Simanggang was once considered remote due to a lack of road connectivity, it is now strategically located between Kuching and Betong along the coastal highway.
With better roads and ongoing infrastructure projects, he urged the people of Simanggang to seize these opportunities to improve their livelihoods.
“With political stability and strong unity, Sarawak’s revenue has continued to grow.
“Last year alone, we recorded revenue of between RM14 to RM15 billion. We are channeling this income into building infrastructure such as bridges, roads, electricity, and water supply systems — all of which are actively being implemented.
“This will lay a strong foundation for holistic economic development and a brighter future for people living in coastal areas, who will benefit from these basic infrastructure developments,” he said.
