MIRI: The President of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Sarawak, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, announced a series of significant development initiatives aimed at boosting the economic and infrastructural landscape of northern Sarawak.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday following the PBB Northern Zone meeting, Abang Johari outlined plans under the 13th Malaysia Plan, particularly through the Highland Development Agency (HDA) and the Regional Corridor Development Authority (RECODA).
One of the key projects is a new road network connecting Marudi town to Long Terawan, Long Iman, and the Ulu area, eventually linking to Mount Buda in Limbang. This infrastructure, he emphasised, would unlock economic opportunities in the region, particularly in agriculture, tourism, and cultural preservation.
“Our focus is on cultural richness and tourism potential. Agriculture, particularly rice production, will also be a priority in the Limbang-Lawas valley,” he said.
Abang Johari also highlighted plans to upgrade the Niah area, home to UNESCO World Heritage sites, and its surrounding coastal regions, such as Bungai Beach. This development will involve expanding existing roads and improving infrastructure to attract more visitors and investors.
“The Niah area holds great potential, not only for tourism but also for fostering international connections. With these developments, Sarawak will be better positioned to attract global interest,” he added.
The Sarawak government’s acquisition of MASwings is set to transform it into a regional airline, improving connectivity and enhancing tourism services in the state.
“This will bring more travellers to Sarawak and significantly boost our tourism industry,” he said.
Additionally, a new port facility in Miri is being developed, featuring an eight-kilometre offshore jetty for cargo handling and cruise ships.
“Cruise ships travelling from Singapore to Bali could stop at Miri, bringing in thousands of tourists who can explore attractions such as Niah and Miri,” Abang Johari said.
Abang Johari reiterated that these projects align with Sarawak’s 2030 development vision, focusing on infrastructure, tourism, and economic diversification.
“With sufficient funding, these initiatives will enhance Sarawak’s position as a leading destination in the region,” he said.
These transformative plans reflect the state’s commitment to sustainable growth, with benefits expected to ripple across northern Sarawak in the years to come.
