MIRI: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has given the thumbs-up for a pilot project on adult literacy programme to be carried out at a Penan pre-school in Long Leng near here.

He believed that the programme would in future help adult Penans (especially parents) to learn to read, write and acquire simple mathematics.

“Via the programme which will be done by Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah’s ministry (Ministry for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development), it will help the parents and elderly who did not have the opportunity to go to school,” he told a group of local media on Tuesday after the launching of Long Leng’s Penan pre-school in Tutoh Apoh, Baram.

“I hope that this pilot project would become a success” said Abang Johari.

Meanwhile, Fatimah disclosed that the programme would also teach the Penans especially their women on skills to produce handicrafts.
