SIBU: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has expressed his support for the proposed construction of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Abang Ali here.
He said the Sarawak government is prepared to cover the initial construction cost, on the condition that the federal government reimburses the expenditure.
“We are ready to proceed with the construction, but on the condition that the Federal Government reimburses the cost.
“We will source the necessary funds and, God willing, the construction of SMK Abang Ali will become a reality,” he said when speaking at the Sibu Division Hari Raya gathering here, last night (Apr 4).
The Premier was alluding to a proposal by Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee for the establishment of the school.
He added that the proposal for the school was also raised by his wife, Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang, who is an alumna of SK Abang Ali.
“Ani (Juma’ani) asked me a few times about the school. I think it’s about time — otherwise, I’ll be sleeping outside,” he said in jest.
Earlier in his speech, Dr Annuar, who is also the Nangka assemblyman, said the establishment of SMK Abang Ali was intended to provide continuity for pupils who had completed their primary education at SK Abang Ali.
“SK Abang Ali is already 150 years old, and we have long dreamed of the establishment of SMK Abang Ali to ensure continuity for students from SK Abang Ali to pursue their secondary education.
“This school will certainly have a significant impact on our children’s education, especially once the redevelopment of Kampung Nangka is carried out,” he added.
