KAPIT: A 26-year-old pregnant woman, due to deliver her sixth child, was among three locals evacuated from Rh Engkeng, Sungai Amang today (Nov 27) after floodwaters rose to three metres around the longhouse.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said that firefighters from Kapit station were dispatched to the scene, about 10km away, after receiving a distress call at 5am.

Upon arrival, the team secured two sets of ropes to cross from a nearby bridge to the longhouse. They then evacuated the pregnant woman, a 28-year-old man and another woman using a villager’s boat.

After reaching a safe zone, the team contacted the Kapit Hospital’s emergency unit to arrange an ambulance for the pregnant woman. However, she was transported to the hospital in a resident’s van as she was about to go into labour.

The mother safely gave birth to a healthy baby girl at around 7.30am at the hospital’s maternity ward.
