KANOWIT: A temporary evacuation centre (PPS) has been opened at Dewan Datuk Aaron, Bawan, to house victims of the fire at Rumah Paulus Yan, Sungai Bawan, which occurred on Wednesday (Jan 15).

The Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (JPBNS), in a statement, said that the PPS was opened at 2.30 pm, accommodating 15 families comprising 56 fire victims.

As of 8 am yesterday (Jan 16), the number of victims has decreased to 14 families, totalling 32 people.

Sibu Resident Abang Mohamad Porkan Abang Budiman was seen visiting the PPS today (Jan 16).

Meanwhile, the number of victims placed in the PPS at the Kanowit Sports Complex due to flooding continues to rise.

The number of victims has increased to 35 people, compared to 22 on the first day of the PPS’ opening on Monday (Jan 13).

Flooding in several areas of Sibu and Kanowit has forced more residents to relocate to temporary shelters.

Affected areas include Rumah Leo Nanga Lipus, Rumah Alice Jimmy, Rumah Alexander Batu 12, Rumah Geoffrey, Rumah Joseph Rantau Kemiding, and several private homes.

Authorities have instructed that evacuation operations continue to ensure the safety of residents still trapped by the floods.

Unpredictable weather conditions are expected to pose ongoing risks to the affected areas.

Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to remain vigilant.

The PPS at the Kanowit Sports Complex is expected to operate until the flood situation fully recovers, allowing victims to safely return to their homes.
