SEBUYAU: Technical issues affecting all four units at the Bakun Dam have been identified as the main cause of widespread power outages in several major cities and towns across Sarawak, including Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu, and Miri.

Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) is currently investigating the root cause of the issue while ensuring the gradual restoration of electricity supply.

“According to the report from SEB’s chief operating officer, James Ung, I was informed that they are working to repair and restore power in stages.

“Nevertheless, the investigation into the root cause of the outage is still ongoing. Therefore, we will wait for an official press release from SEB,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters after officiating at the Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Sebuyau Branch Delegates Meeting at the Sebuyau Development Hall here yesterday (Dec 21).

The power outage yesterday afternoon has caused concern among residents, especially with widespread reports on social media about areas plunged into darkness and traffic chaos has been reported in several areas of Kuching.

SEB had earlier confirmed that all affected areas have been fully restored as of 3 pm yesterday.

However, users still experiencing power disruptions are advised to report the issue via the hotline at 1-300-88-3111 or through the SEB Cares application.
