KUCHING: Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman said the progress of the electronic sports (e-sports) industry here is positive and rising among local youths.
Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman supports the e-sports industry as his Ministry aims to compete in e-sports in this year’s Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 2019).
Fazzrudin when prompted on the progress of the e-sports industry in Sarawak, said our youths are responding well and showing huge interest in the new sports.
“Certainly, when Syed Saddiq announced his support for the e-sports industry we welcome it as a positive outreach for the youth here.
“Presently the e-sports industry in Sarawak is booming and receiving positive response from our youths. I heard recently that a Sarawakian was appointed as one of the deputy presidents for E-sports Malaysia but has yet to be confirmed.
“The youths of Sarawak are certainly supporting this industry and appreciate the efforts made by the Youth and Sports Minister in developing e-sports in the country,” he said.
Fazzrudin also mentioned that e-sports is a new field in the world of sports and there are various challenges which needed to be looked into based on the state government’s policies.
“That is why I have been struggling for the past three years to build a solid foundation in this industry in terms of policies and legislations so that an e-sports centre or arena can be built in accordance with the state’s laws.
“If there is an e-sports centre here then our youths can train and compete. Only then can we pick the most qualified candidates to compete in the international e-sports arena.
“I also hope that one day Sarawak will become a major player in the e-sports industry and with strong support from the youth it may achieve the highest level,” Fazzrudin said.
