MIRI: Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin says Miri is poised for transformative growth with key development projects that will bolster its economic and infrastructural landscape.
Speaking at the Imasa Dinasti Sdn Bhd (TAK Group of Companies) 2025 Chinese New Year gathering, he highlighted major initiatives that will serve as catalysts for Miri’s future development.
Lee stressed the importance of an efficient port for the city’s economic progress. After years of being hindered by a shallow river mouth, plans are now underway to construct a modern port with a depth of 22 to 25 metres, enabling larger vessels to dock.
The reclamation efforts, supported by advanced simulation models, have already seen 400 metres of the project completed.
“The project will naturally reclaim approximately 2,000 acres of land, creating opportunities for commercial and industrial growth,” he said.
The reclaimed land is set to transform into Miri port city, with plans to attract industries and developers, creating a vibrant new hub for trade and commerce.
Another key component of the city’s development is the 3,000 acres of industrial land in Kuala Baram. The federal government has already agreed to designate 1,000 acres as a free trade zone, further incentivising businesses to set up operations in the region.
“This free trade zone will be a significant catalyst for Miri’s economic development,” Lee said.
The Kenyalang Smart City project is already in motion, serving as a blueprint for urban innovation. Additionally, Miri is exploring renewable energy solutions, with a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant leveraging natural gas and hydrogen.
“This is not just about generating power but also about adopting green energy for a sustainable future,” Lee added.
The government has approved several road projects to enhance connectivity in the Baram region, including a road linking Eastwood Valley, Marudi, Long Terawan, and Sungai Melinau, which will provide direct access to Mulu National Park.
This will enable tourists to travel by bus and a short boat ride to the renowned Mulu Caves. In addition, the upgraded port facilities will allow Miri to become a cruise ship destination, a move already attracting interest from cruise operators.
“Once this is completed, Miri will be on the map as a premier stop for cruise ships,” Lee said.
The event, attended by Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting, Miri MP Chiew Choon Man, and Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang, also featured a RM100,000 donation by architect Teo Ah King to the Miri Chung Hua Middle School Alumni Association.
