KUCHING: In a world increasingly marked by division and unrest, the moral compass of global and local leaders remains critical.
Datuk Seri Ang Lai Soon, chairman and commander of St John Ambulance Sarawak, has called attention to the enduring legacy of Pope Francis—a leader who, in Ang’s words, “stood as a beacon of morality and reason” in turbulent times.
In his Facebook post, Ang noted the relevance of Pope Francis’ teachings in today’s fractured global society, pointing to the Pontiff’s unwavering advocacy for social justice, environmental protection, and interfaith harmony.
“Pope Francis championed the forgotten and the marginalised—those living on the fringes of society. He was a voice for the poor, the persecuted, the migrant.
“He showed us that leadership rooted in humility and compassion can truly unite.”
Ang praised the Pope’s environmental stance, noting that he was among the first major religious figures to link climate change directly to human suffering.
“He recognised that our mistreatment of the planet is deeply connected to the social ills we face today.”
His post also noted the Pope’s choice to live simply, away from the traditional Papal Apartments, and his visible closeness to the people—gestures that resonated with Ang’s own long-standing calls for integrity and service in leadership.
Even during Easter celebrations, Pope Francis remained accessible to the public, blessing children and greeting worshippers from his Popemobile—an act Ang described as symbolic of his deep connection to the people he served.
Reflecting on the Pope’s influence, Ang noted that the values upheld by the Holy Father—love over hate, unity over division, and care over indifference—transcend religious boundaries and hold lessons for all.
“At 88, Pope Francis has left more than a legacy within the Church.
“He has left a roadmap for humanity, rooted in kindness, humility, and faith.”
As Sarawak and the world confront ongoing social and environmental challenges, Ang urged all to heed the lessons of Pope Francis and strive for a world built on empathy, inclusion, and moral courage.
